Oscars 2021 nominaties zijn bekend: record aantal nominaties voor vrouwen
Chloé Zhao en Emerald Fennell hebben nu al geschiedenis geschreven bij de Oscars. Een record die eindelijk in het kamp van de vrouwen ligt.
Voor het eerst in 93 jaar (zolang bestaan de Oscars al) heeft de Academy in één jaar twee vrouwen genomineerd voor Beste Regisseur. De regisseurs van Nomadland en Promising Young Woman ontvingen maandagochtend de nominaties en zijn daarmee de zesde en zevende vrouw ooit in de categorie.
Hoewel de tweevoudige nominatie van beide vrouwen al een mijlpaal is, is de nominatie van de in Peking geboren Zhao op zichzelf al baanbrekend voor de Oscars, omdat zij de eerste gekleurde vrouw is die de genomineerd is voor Beste Regisseur.
Vóór vandaag had de Beste Regisseur categorie van de Academy slechts vijf vrouwen erkend sinds 1976, toen Seven Beauties-maakster Lina Wermüller als eerste vrouw werd genomineerd. In 1994 werd Jane Campion de tweede voor haar werk The Piano uit 1993. Na Campion volgden Sofia Coppola in 2004 (Lost in Translation), Kathryn Bigelow in 2010 (The Hurt Locker), en Greta Gerwig in 2018 (Lady Bird).
Tot nu toe is Bigelow de enige vrouw die Beste Regisseur heeft gewonnen. Toch wordt algemeen verwacht dat Nomadland - met Frances McDormand in de hoofdrol als een zwerver die in haar busje door het land reist in de nasleep van economische problemen - de prijs voor Beste Film zal winnen. Zhao blijft de koploper voor Beste Regisseur nadat ze de soortgelijke prijs won bij de Golden Globes (waar Zhao de eerste Aziatische vrouw werd die won) en de Critics Choice Awards.
